Atopic and contact dermatitis are due to skin barrier abnormalities, immune system dysfunction and inflammation leading to pruritus. Since these factors may involve oxidative stress, emollient devices containing antioxidants furfuryl palmitate and tocopherol may help to reduce itching and inflammation. The present study carried out a post-marketing questionnaire of 40 users of a novel emollient device containing furfuryl palmitate and tocopherol (Relizema™ cream) to confirm the emollient device′s action on itching, flushing and moisturizing.

This survey collected data on age; diagnosis; the number of application times/day, the number of days of the emollient device application; its effect on itching and flushing, and time required for the improvement; and the effect on the skin after using the emollient.

The study observed:

  • Atopic dermatitis (n = 25) or irritant contact dermatitis (n = 10) in most of the patients.
  • The majority had an age ≥19 years (n = 20) or between 3 and 12 years (n = 12).
  • The majority used the emollient device twice a day (n = 26) or more (n = 11).
  • Twenty-seven people used it for ≤30 days.
  • Patients primarily reported that the emollient device "significantly improved" itching (n = 34) and flushing (n = 31), with a response within 1 day (n = 17) or 1 week (n = 22).
  • All users experienced that the product "protected and moisturized" their skin, its texture was "pleasant" to "excellent," and the "non-fragrance" smell was "acceptable" to "excellent."

This study shows that using a novel emollient device containing ingredients to manage atopic or contact dermatitis, including furfuryl palmitate and tocopherol, causes rapid improvements in itching and flushing. The emollient device used in this study is acceptable to the users.
